The Bleeding Heart is in BETA: Testers Wanted

The Bleeding Heart Art Space is in BETA mode. We are looking for BETA testers to help us experience what the Space may bring to our community and our city, before the doors open. Bleeding Heart BETAs are nights that somehow reflect the vision, values and manifesto of the Bleeding Heart Art Space.

Over the next few months we’ll be hosting events in the city dubbed as Bleeding Heart BETA’s, covering a broad range of arts from a various perspectives. We hope you’ll join us for some (or all!) of these upcoming experiments in what an ART / SACRED / COMMUNITY space might look like.

Here are some highlights so far;

February 19: Conversation on Chris Millar’s AGA exhibit The Untimely Transmogrification of the Problem. At The Carrot | get details.

March: Director’s conversation on Harvey at Concordia University College.

June: NEW EYES: Bridge Songs 2012

We are also putting together a night of short film, and a chance to create in community. Stay tuned.

If you have any ideas for a Bleeding Heart BETA night – let us know at info@iloveartists.ca

Announcing NEW EYES: Bridge Songs 2012

This June 15-17, 2012, we are calling artists and musicians to create something beautiful in community on Alberta Ave. Again.

Our annual Bridge Songs event just keeps better, and today we’re taking the wraps off of the next instalment: NEW EYES.

What is NEW EYES? Well, there will be a live concert full of original songs written just for the event, around the theme “NEW EYES”. There will be two art shows with original artwork created for the event. There will be an arts workshop. There will be art and community on Alberta Avenue. Hopefully, you will join us.

Our Theme: NEW EYES

The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes.” – Marcel Proust

We invite artists to look at their world with NEW EYES. In a culture obsessed with the “new”, whether it’s a new iPhone, a New Release DVD or a newly sculpted nose, we forget to visit and value the old. It is often easier to start something new than complete something old, but perhaps the effort is worth it. We are seeking work that wrestles with the ideas of renewal, the tension between novel and traditional, past and future, youth and aging, and the displacement of the old by the new. Artists may also explore revision, both metaphorically and literally. Artists are invited to breathe new life into an old world, and even old work.

NEW EYES is all about the second chance. Revisit. Revise. Recycle. Redeem. Reimagine.

Submitting Your Work

We will have the official Call for Submissions ready in the next month of so, but we wanted to get you thinking now. What can you create around our NEW EYES theme? We’re open to any type of work; visual art, poetry, prose, dance, drama, short film, installations, performance art … you name it.

If you have any questions, send us an email. Help us make the NEW EYES open this coming June 15-17, 2012.

Wishbone Theatre Brings Bashir Lazhar to Alberta Ave

Aposter for Bashir Lazharnyone planning to join Edmonton’s Arty Social Club this Thursday evening for live improv already knows there is no shortage of great theatre on Alberta Avenue. But if you needed a reason to believe, boy do I have one for you.

My friend (I love it when I can say that) Michael Peng stars in Bashir Lazhar, a play produced by his Wishbone Theatre company, and until now performed overseas and in Ontario. It’s a great chance to catch great theatre in a great, local venue, The Avenue Theatre.

I’ll let Michael take it from here, with his original email …

My theatre company, wishbone theatre, thought it would be prudent to take advantage of our recent international (UK, Edinburgh) and sell-out (Kitchener) successes and remount “Bashir Lazhar” here in Etown. Then we get to put it to bed for awhile (I promised Kate…). We’ve chosen to run it at The Avenue Theatre on 118th Ave. next weekend, Oct.12-15th @ 8pm and Oct. 16th @ 2pm. Nicola Elbro is joining me on stage for this run – she’s a gifted actor and a wonderful human being!

It was important for us to tell this story in the place where many new Canadians choose to settle when they come to Edmonton. Our goal has been to strengthen connections we made with the immigrant community in 2009 and to invite even MORE people to meet Bashir. To that end, on Saturday (the 15th), we’ve planned a series of discussions and workshops on themes raised in the play – namely justice, tolerance, education and artistic expression. More details will be forthcoming on those ancillary events. Keep your eyes glued to our facebook page:www.facebook.com/wishbonetheatre

There are only 5 shows at The Avenue Theatre and seating is limited, so if you didn’t get a chance to see Bashir two years ago at the Fringe, or you’ve seen it but you want to reacquaint yourself with this moving production of a rich and very rewarding play (made more resonant by the changes taking place in the Arab world), we hope to see you at the show.

Attached please find a poster advertising the show. Send it to your co-workers. Your mother. Your taxi driver. We want as many as possible to experience the beauty of Bashir. Tickets are available online at http://www.tixonthesquare.ca/event/run/detail/463/ or at TixOnTheSquare: (780) 420-1757.

Did you catch this exciting bit?

“on Saturday (the 15th), we’ve planned a series of discussions and workshops on themes raised in the play – namely justice, tolerance, education and artistic expression.”

I’m thankful to Michael for bringing this to us, hope I can make it out, and I hope to see you there, too.

Introducing the Arty Social Club

“Hello, My name is Andy and I love Edmonton. I would like to invite you to experience our city’s colorful and diverse arts community with the Arty Social Club.”

And so begins an adventure led by Andy Mulcair that I am excited to become a part of. For a long while we here at iLoveArtists have wanted some consistant, “arty” gathering where we experience the best of what Edmonton has to offer arts-wise in community. Local musician Andy Mulcair has agreed to head this group up, and you are invited to join the club. The first event is a trip to Rapid Fire Theatre’s TheatreSports North, right here on Alberta Ave in the Avenue Theatre.

Get the details, and let Andy know you are coming, here: http://www.iloveartists.ca/calendar/?entry=49
